Because I Can Spotlight
Ann Carroll
Ann’s “Because I Can” Moment
I am proud to say that I am a cancer survivor!! I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer when I was just 17 years old. I was a thriving varsity soccer player and competitive figure skater enjoying my junior year at Edina High School. I just didn’t feel right and on top of that looked like I was about 6 months pregnant! After numerous trips to doctors across the metro, surgery was a must. A 9lb tumor was removed from my lower abdomen and chemotherapy was next. I approached my diagnosis like something I really didn’t have time for! After all, I had proms and skating performances and friends! But after losing all of my hair, months and months of chemo, weeks of missed school…..I was finally awarded a clean bill of health by my senior year!!! It was during that time that I realized there was no holding back! I was on a mission to go for my dreams! After all, I had just been taught a very important lesson. Life is precious and life is short, everything can be taken from you in an instant! So, from then on out I set my sights on working hard to live out my dream ….becoming a TV sports reporter……. BECAUSE I CAN!

Cathy Brewster
Cathy’s “Because I Can” Moment
I always wanted to own and operate a women’s only gym. Since I am married to a football coach, stable living in one city for more than three years is not something that can be counted on. After certifying to be a group fitness and personal fitness instructor, I went to a gals home to help her lose weight and tone-up for her daughter’s wedding. Since that day in 1990, I knew I could help women with weight and health issues by operating a small business out of my home. I can talk, work, and live fitness without owning a gym, “because I can.”
